I am pleased to actively support Worthing Borough Council's bid for over £20 million in Levelling-Up funds. I understand that the Secretary of State is considering applications this week and news, hopefully good, will be received in the coming days.
I met with Andy Willems, Head of Place & Economy, Place & Economy, and Martin Randall, Director for the Economy, at Worthing Borough Council to discuss the plans in detail.
The application focuses on restoring the Lido, letting in the light at the Museum and Art Gallery, and revitalising the golden mile of public realms interconnecting the two with the station.
We can appreciate that the Lido has required massive investment for decades to save the structure which is at high risk. Such a project needs significant public investment to enable private investment into our promenade offerings.
Crucial is that these projects are also deliverable on appropriate timescales. Contractors could be onsite at the Lido and Museum within weeks of notification of a successful bid.
We know the strong value of investment in our public realms and places of cultural heritage. Work at Portland Road has rid the busy shopping location of vacant units whilst investment in our Dome Cinema has secured its place at the heart of our beloved cultural centre.
As the Member of Parliament representing the centre of Worthing and much of the surrounding economy and community, I back this bid completely. I want quick, effective transformation of the Town centre and an attractive mile between the coast and the station to warmly welcome all - visitors and residents alike.
