I was pleased to present to a wide variety of developers, local government housing executives, inspectors, insurers and fire service leaders regarding the impacts of the Building Safety Bill.
The Bill and new Regulator addresses how we progress with designing, building and renovating our buildings in the future. It introduces changes to the Building Act, Architects Act and Building Regulations that all need to be aware of.
We need evidence that people in authority understand that leaseholders don’t own a brick in their building. Their interests should come first.
Leaseholders did not cause the problems in their buildings: their homes should be safe, their homes should be sellable.
The Government must create a system where problems are found, problems are fixed, works are funded - and that those responsible are then asked to pay the costs of their faults.
I do not think that the Building Safety Act and the Fire Safety Bill yet achieve these necessary aims. Those in attendance listened.
The Government must consider those campaigning for a better future and act on their demands: Leasehold Knowledge Partnership, the National Leasehold Campaign ( NLC ) and the many Cladding Groups.
There is work to do.
