Putin’s illegal war in Ukraine has affected us all, and over 500 days since the war started. Today, I stood with colleagues and supporters in solidarity with the people of Ukraine.
Importantly, this is more than "a quarrel in a far-away country between people of whom we know nothing". Ukraine is not far away; it is a neighbour, it is a friend, it is an ally. The consequences are far-reaching.
The United Kingdom has been most able to challenge the dangerous actions and intentions of Putin. We have the lowest dependency on Russian gas and are the furthest away from ground conflict. Respect our allies who are taking expensive and difficult decisions.
The government, working with our innovative defence sector, has provided unprecedented support to Ukraine to defend itself, and it is vital we all continue to show our support, and make sure Ukraine wins the war.
The call for solidarity brought together Ukrainian refugees alongside those who have supported them in Britain, Britain’s defence and diplomacy organisations, and senior representatives from Embassies from across the world, to show support for how the UK can, and is, upholding our values across the world to support Ukraine.
Khay zhyve vilʹna Ukrayina – may she live a free Ukraine.
