I am grateful to Dr Susan Michaelis, Founder of the Lobular Moon Shot Project, for visiting Parliament and explaining shared concerns about the need for research and investment in the diagnosis and treatment of Invasive Lobular Breast Cancer.
At least 1000 people a year are diagnosed with this little-known form of cancer. Lobular behaves differently to the more common type of breast cancer (known as ductal) and rarely shows on mammograms.
I also took the opportunity to speak to leading experts about a major emerging cardiovascular disease risk factor (CVD) that affects up to 1/5th of the population – Lipoprotein(a) (or Lp(a) – and the action that is needed to transform health outcomes in the UK.
CVD is the leading cause of preventable and premature mortality in the UK and progress to improve outcomes for the 7.6 million people affected by heart and circulatory conditions has stalled in recent years.
We have the golden opportunity to change the future of lobular breast cancer treatment and tackle the leading causes of cardiovascular disease, and as such save tens of thousands of lives each year. I support calls for direct government funding to begin these vital programmes and the necessary associated trials.
