The Week Ahead:
As we approach Easter Weekend, many in Worthing will be fasting for Lent or Ramadan. Some are fasting in solidarity with those starving and suffering across the world.
On Sunday, we recognise the UN Human Rights Day, marking Oscar Romero's assassination on the 24th of March, 1980. Romero's faithful work to protect the oppressed and to help those in need rings true today as much as it did in El Salvador in the 1970s.
As the recently re-elected Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Human Rights in the Gulf, I take my pledge to defend human rights seriously.
I work proactively to reach the point when colleagues from across the House can come together and agree on a unified statement on how we can assist in bringing a conclusion to the devastation and bloodshed we see in Gaza and Israel.
Below is a quote that represents the spirit of Oscar Romero:
"Peace is not the product of terror or fear; peace is not the silence of cemeteries; peace is not the silent result of violent repression.
Peace is the generous, tranquil contribution of all, to the good of all."
We all wish for an end to the violence. Let us all work towards peaceful unity at this time of division.
This week is English Tourism Week, an annual celebration of English tourism and culture. It is an important opportunity to highlight the importance, value and vast contribution the sector makes to the national and local economy.
Investment by the previous Council in Highdown Gardens and private investment in key landmarks like Perch on Worthing Pier have brought a great amount of interest in Worthing's visitor economy. We celebrate this and look to what we can do next to further invigorate interest in our sunny stretch of the South Coast.
