Three years ago in 2021, over 300km² of seabed was protected from trawling by the Sussex Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority. This saw the creation of the largest marine rewilding project in the UK - Sussex Kelp Recovery Project.
We appreciate that it will take time for the ecosystem to fully recover following decades of destructive practices. We have some initial glimmers of hope for recovery in Sussex seas.
Research has shown huge expanses of Mussel beds returning to Sussex, which we hope will provide the hard substrate for Kelp to re-establish on to.
As we celebrate this milestone, we recognise what more needs to be done. Residents know of my longstanding work to improve our waters and identify and reduce storm overflow. I was proud to join with campaigners and local councils in making the Kelp Forest project possible.
Our waters are for everyone. I am proud to go on campaigning to protect and enhance our blue and green spaces for the benefit of people, nature and the planet.
