Biomedicine is the science at the heart of our healthcare.
70% of diagnoses in the NHS are based on pathology results provided by laboratory services with over 150 million samples handled each year.
Every person in the UK will benefit from the expert services of a biomedical scientist at some point in their life.
I was pleased to meet with representatives of the Institute of Biomedical Science, the UK’s leading professional body for biomedical science, to discuss how to maximise early diagnostics and expand testing capacity to address the critical challenges facing the NHS, including backlogs and waiting times.
I spoke with the CEO and former Head of Pathology at NHS England, David Wells, and heard about the exciting innovations taking place across the sector and understand what further support is needed from policymakers to unlock the potential of biomedical science.
The global vaccine efforts and testing advances during the Covid-19 pandemic exhibited the strength of British Science in handling emerging health issues and crises. I join in supporting them in protecting us from the diseases of the future and better tackling the health problems of the present.
