Tim Loughton MP and I received a powerful briefing in person during a visit to Worthing’s Fire Station last Friday.
Particular areas of concern included the dangers of lithium-ion batteries which have led to serious fire incidents when overheating or, even worse, exploding in homes. These batteries are common and can be found in items ranging from vapes and laptops to electric wheelchairs and e-scooters. Damage and unregulated modification to rechargeable items can pose a significant danger.
I politely declined their offer of a trip up the 32-metre extending ladder, as impressive as it is. I can get dizzy standing on my own dignity sometimes.
With the impressive ladder, the fire and rescue team can reach any high-rise building in Worthing and the surrounding area meaning the many blocks of flats on the seafront are safer.
During a meeting earlier this week with the APPG on Fire Safety, we discussed further work to decrease the danger from home fires including policy to ensure furniture and furnishings are of a higher standard of fire safety. I raised the sensible advice and warnings given by our local hardworking fire and rescue teams regarding safe practices when charging lithium-ion batteries at home.
We recognise and celebrate West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service's good work on tackling stereotypes and breaking down barriers in recruitment. Everyone belongs in the fire service regardless of gender, race and background.
Thank you for the engaging visit, for the hard work protecting our communities and for supporting my longstanding campaign to reduce the risk of Carbon Monoxide poisoning in our homes.
