This week is International Heart Valve Disease Awareness Week, a week that aims to improve the global diagnosis, treatment, and management of heart valve disease.
I dropped by the #YourHeartMatter’s Bus, organised by Heart Valve Voice, to learn more about Heart Valve Disease and how to spot it. I also had my heart checked, easily, in a matter of a few seconds.
Heart valve disease is a serious condition that affects 1.5 million over 65s in the UK. However, awareness of the red flag symptoms is very low. Early detection and timely treatment are critical in stopping unnecessary deaths because of Heart Valve Disease.
Symptoms can include breathlessness, dizziness and fatigue but sometimes there can be no symptoms at all. The best form of detection is a simple regular stethoscope check.
Heart Valve Disease can happen as part of the ageing process when our valves don’t open and close as they should. One out of eight people over the age of 75 suffers from moderate to severe heart valve disease.
Ask your doctor for a stethoscope check- this simple check can save your life. #ListenToYourHeart.
