Constituents were in touch last year with concerns about the effect new parking restrictions at the Tesco Extra Durrington would have on Durrington Community Centre and its users.
Following urgent conversations with the senior leadership team at Tesco and with representatives of the Durrington Community Centre and local Councillors, we received reassurance that Tesco would be working to address concerns and ensure that access for Community Centre users would continue without issue.
I have since received further clarification from Tesco that they are in the process of updating the maximum stay at the store, which will display ‘between 6am – 10pm’ from 2 hours to 4 hours. This should come into effect in the coming weeks.
Tesco are also in the process of sourcing a tablet for the Community Centre which will then be able to manage its own exemptions going forward.
We are grateful to Tesco for taking these actions but they should should not have been necessary. The anxiety and concern caused by a shortsighted decision are unnecessary and could have been prevented by a simple level of communication.
Local residents and community members can have confidence that I will continue to be engaged with this important concern and continue to remain engaged until there is a resolution that is in the best interests of the Community Centre and its users.
