Community leaders and members of the military community in Worthing joined together for a memorial service outside of Worthing Town Hall, commemorating the Battle of Britain 83 years on.
The Battle of Britain, fought mainly in the skies above Sussex, was a 112-day long battle for control of Britain’s skies between July and October 1940. It was the first decisive battle in history fought entirely in the air and one which proved to be a dramatic turning point in the Second World War for the United Kingdom and for allied forces.
Local pilots were pivotal in the battle. Intense enemy raids aiming for ports, cities and industrial centres intent on clearing the way for a full-scale invasion of Britain were met by courageous British and allied pilots flying out of local airfields and RAF bases.
It was their courage and perseverance that halted the advance of a terrible tyranny. They held fast in days of greatest danger.
Thank you to 45F Worthing Squadron and the veterans in attendance. Lest we forget.
